Come experience what winter life was like in this restored prairie farmhouse built by Bryant Durant in 1843. He and his wife, Jerusha, raised six children in the home. Having copies of young Abba Durant’s diary (written from 1866 to 1875), our docents will share true stories of their lives. There will be a fire in the hearth and some food to sample while you enjoy a tour and history lesson.
Just a short walk from the House is Sholes School, a one-room schoolhouse dating from 1872 that currently serves as a living history classroom. Stepping into the school is like stepping back in time. Find a desk and listen as docents share stories of what the school day was like for children living on the Illinois prairie at the turn of the century. Please dress for comfort.
Parking for the Museum is located about 3/4-mile inside the Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve.
